A statement fashion piece is the item in an outfit that immediately catches one’s eye and at the same time highlights your wardrobe basics bringing your entire ensemble together. Statement pieces can elevate an otherwise plain outfit or add a little extra spark to an already fierce ensemble. Every outfit needs at least one statement piece, if you’re like me you will wear them all at once, which I would strongly advise against, but go big or go home right?
Don’t lose your sense of self when picking your statement pieces. For instance, if you don’t like jewellery a big and bold necklace is probably not for you. Experiment and go out of your comfort zone, while staying distinctly you.
Take note, here are some of my must have statement pieces. Next time you walk out of your house, be sure to have at least one of these on.
1. GORGEOUS GLASSES
One would ask what makes a pair of glasses a statement piece, the shape, the colour or the frames. My answer to this is always, all three. A regular square or rectangular shaped pair of glasses, could easily be given the X factor with the right splash of colour, the same goes for a cat eye or oval pair of glasses with a neutral colour. Reflective, metallic-looking glasses will make you stand out effortlessly. When you look at a selection of glasses, the pairs that immediately pop out are the ones you need to quickly throw into your shopping basket before anyone beats you to it.
2. ECCENTRIC EARRINGS
Jewellery can play a huge role in putting an outfit together; with the right set of jewellery an outfit will go from tacky to classy real quick or vice versa with the wrong pair. Sadly most of us are oblivious of the fact that attention to even the smallest detail, is what makes an outfit great. With your hair tied back a pair of tassel earrings would make the perfect statement piece. Tassel earrings are hugely popular and that won’t be changing anytime soon. If you haven’t jumped on that train now is the time.
3. POWER PANTSUITS
Nothing says “I mean business” more than a woman in a well-tailored pantsuit. Unlike a lot of pieces where the print or colour makes it a statement, women in pantsuits regardless of the style, print or colour is always a statement. People naturally associate pantsuits with men before women and donning one is an easy way to stand out. Your suit need not be drab or conservative as there are many ways to mix it up and have fun with the classic look. You can go for neutrals, prints or bright colours. Either way, a pantsuit styled the right way exudes a sense of class and sophistication.
4. LOVELY LOAFERS
If you want to make a fashion statement with your shoes the obvious choice would be heels. A wise priestess once said, every inch of hard material under a woman’s heels gives her an inch of extra confidence. But we all know those extra inches also increase the level of discomfort, which is why with platform loafers you get to kill three birds with one stone. Your comfort is not compromised and you still have the extra height and confidence that you would have with heels. It’s not hard to make a statement with platform loafers regardless of their style, thick soles carry a lot of character and that is all the statement you need.
5. BOLD BLOUSES
On your next shopping trip instead of the usual plain shirts, look out for those with ruffles and pleats. Infuse more unorthodox sleeve types such as trumpet sleeves, wrinkled sleeves and puffy sleeves.
A blouse is something everyone needs. With the number of times one steps out, it is so easy to get comfortable and settle into the habit of throwing on that plain shirt that goes with everything. The further away it is from your usual long or short-sleeved top, the better. The fabric types should also be put into consideration; you can never go wrong with silk and metallic tops. They always ensure a statement is made.
