When Chilekwa Mumba first stood on the banks of the Kafue River, gazing at the coppery sludge seeping from a nearby mine, he knew something was terribly wrong. Little did Mumba realise then that he would soon take on a multinational mining giant, Vedanta Resources, and help secure a historic victory for his community.

Mumba, a Zambian community organiser and environmental activist, was deeply moved by the environmental destruction he witnessed around Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) in the Copperbelt Province. Vedanta Resources, which took over KCM in 2004, had become notorious for polluting the local environment. After sending letters and emails to over 100 organisations, Mumba finally received a response from Leigh Day, a UK-based law firm. Leigh Day agreed to take on the case, marking the beginning of a legal battle that would eventually make history.

Working closely with Leigh Day's lawyers, Mumba took on the role of an investigator and community liaison. He gathered water and soil samples, conducted interviews with villagers, and compiled testimonies that outlined the extent of the damage caused by KCM's mining operations. In 2019, the case reached the UK Supreme Court, where Mumba and his legal team argued that Vedanta, as the parent company of KCM, should be held responsible for the environmental harm caused by its subsidiary in Zambia. In a landmark decision, the court ruled in favor of the Zambian villagers, allowing them to sue Vedanta in British courts. This was the first time an English court had ruled that a UK-based company could be held liable for the actions of its overseas subsidiaries, setting a powerful legal precedent.
