Many couriers resort to using hard hats, bicycle helmets, and even unregulated open-toed shoes instead of approved motorbike helmets and boots. This inadequate safety gear significantly increases their risk of injury in an environment already fraught with danger.

The absence of proper safety measures has contributed to a disturbing rise in accidents, with over 1,000 bikers reported dead this year alone. This statistic, revealed by the Association’s president, underscores the grave risks associated with motorcycle delivery jobs.

 The Struggle for Equal Road Usage and Road Safety

The dangers faced by motorbike couriers are compounded by what is deemed a lack of respect from other motorists. It is presumed that many drivers fail to acknowledge bikers as legitimate road users, leading to a hostile and unsafe driving environment. The perceived lack of consideration not only jeopardises the safety of bikers but also contributes to the high accident rates within this profession. The lack of stricter road safety laws and regulations around biker protection further compounds these issues.

The Bikers Association emphasises that bikers play a crucial role in the smooth operation of Zambian e-commerce and the broader economy. Their work supports the e-commerce boom, which has become a cornerstone of many livelihoods in Lusaka. However, without substantial reforms and better regulation, the sector may face a slow collapse. The current working conditions, coupled with inadequate safety measures and insufficient respect from road users, highlight an urgent need for action.

To address these issues, there must be a concerted effort to improve the working conditions for motorbike couriers. This includes providing fair pay, adequate safety gear, and ensuring that their role is recognised and respected by all road users.
